The Evolution of
Electronic
Circuits for the EVil Genius
-
I’ve been teaching High School Electronics since 1991. By '98,
I was attempting to move into much more depth. But many of my students
were not getting the concepts of what I was trying to explain, regardless
of the number of pictures I drew. So I developed a few animated Gif
files, actively showing what I was desperately attempting to show in still
drawings. These animations were more than successful. It developed
from there. I realized that I was developing more depth for
the same lessons each passing year. I developed a set of animations
with explanations around them and began to use them each year.
Shortly after that, I thought that maybe I had something good, with
standard lectures, materials, and exercises. I even had quizzes and
tests. As I formalized the material, I found that my students moved through
it more easily. My classes were covering twice as much material,
with reasonable understanding, as anybody else I knew teaching the same
course.
Then I realized that my course was more than good. It was truly
unique. Generally, electronics is not available as a high school
course. British Columbia is one of the few places in North America
that has a Department of Education Curriculum Guide for High School Electronics.
I know that my material inspires my students as they learn the content.
Many of my students have entered high tech careers, and they credit the
solid basics of my course. I know there is no other book specific
to electronics targeted to the complete beginner's market. I know
that people are limited by the texts and books currently available.
I have had older students (16 & 17) that have searched in vain in bookstores
and on the internet for material similar to what I have developed.
All they have found are those books written for either much younger or
more mature learners. The only book to come close to hitting the
mark for them is the recently published JunkBots, Bugbots, and Bots
on Wheels by David Hrynkiw & Mark Tilden.
