Part III Exercise Key
Lesson 34
Page 129 Introducing the Zener

1.

The Zener Diode will always use its rated voltage (as long as the voltage is available) to an accuracy of 1%.

2.  For Figure L34-5 You have to breadboard this circuit and measure it yourself.

Column 2 Creating the Switch
1. Peak voltage can be figured as shown here. Assuming precisely 9 V input.
     Output = V+  – (VD1 + VD2  + VDZ)

      Expected =   9V  –  (.8 V + .8 V + 5.1 V)

           2.3 V =  9V  –  6.7 V

2. Variable answer.  This depends on the size of C1.
 Using part sizes noted in Table 34-4, it should drain to 0.0 volts in less than 10 seconds.
3a. Touching across the bottom of the Push Button is bypassing the hardware switch.  Yes, some small amounts of voltage does pass.  Remember, the finger’s resistance varies between 100K? to 2M?.  Results will vary widely here, but shouldn’t (can’t) exceed the voltage recorded in #1.

3b. The answer here is the same as in the first part of this question.
4. These results are in direct relationship to the RC timing.  Once you know the standards, you can predict any changes.
5a. With the Zener diode in place, it takes a short time for the voltage at the output to fall from 2 volts to 0 V.
5b. With the Zener replaced with a wire, it takes much longer to fall from nearly 7 volts to 0 V.
