As the trim pot is adjusted, the ratio of the voltage divider changes to greater or less than half of the voltage.

As the resistance of the LDR changes with the light, the ratio of the voltage divider changes to greater or less than half of the voltage.

Dark Switch - Analog Inputs control the Digital Output
By reversing the physical relationship of the LDR and resistor, the effect on the inputs is also reversed. The amount of light effects the ratio of the voltage divider, changing to greater or less than half of the voltage.
